Getting around Cusco is easier than it seems, but knowing the right options can help you save time and money and avoid problems. Whether you want to explore the Historic Center, visit traditional neighborhoods like San Blas, or travel to the Sacred Valley, here we explain the best transportation alternatives depending on your type of trip.
Walking in Cusco: The Best Way to Explore the Historic Center
Most of the attractions in Cusco’s Historic Center are just a few minutes apart, and walking is the most practical and enjoyable way to explore the city. Iconic streets like Hatun Rumiyoc, Loreto, San Blas, and the Plaza de Armas are ideal for enjoying the architecture and taking photos without needing transportation.
Although some streets are steep, walking allows you to discover shops, viewpoints, and hidden gems that are easily missed from a taxi or bus. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes and walk slowly due to the altitude.
Taxis: Practical, economical, and recommended for short distances
Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for tourists. Taxis in Cusco don’t use meters, so fares are agreed upon before the trip begins. On average, rides within the city cost between 5 and 10 soles, depending on the distance.
It’s recommended to take safe taxis:
From your hotel From formal agencies From mobile apps like Uber, Didi, or InDriver From official taxi stands at the Plaza de Armas or the airport Taxis are ideal for getting to San Blas, Sacsayhuamán, the bus terminal, shopping centers, and nearby attractions.
Public transportation: Economical but not the most comfortable for tourists
Cusco has buses and minibuses that connect the main districts. They are very inexpensive (between 1 and 2 soles), but they tend to be crowded during peak hours, and the routes can be confusing for visitors.
It’s recommended to use them only if you already know the city or are traveling with a local. For tourists, walking or taking a taxi remains the best option for comfort and safety.
Tourist and private services: ideal for longer routes
To visit more remote places like the Sacred Valley, Maras, Moray, Humantay Lagoon, or Rainbow Mountain, the most comfortable and safe way is to hire a tour service or private transportation.
Advantages:
Experienced drivers for mountain routes Hotel pickup Authorized vehicles Greater safety on rural roads Option to customize your itinerary Many agencies offer shared and private transportation, depending on the traveler’s budget.
How to get from the airport to the Historic Center?
The distance is short: only 15 to 20 minutes.
Recommended options:
Registered airport taxi (safe and fast) Apps like Uber or Didi Transfer from a travel agency or your hotel Avoid taking unregistered taxis outside the airport.
Recommended routes for travelers: Short routes within Cusco

Final tips for getting around Cusco:
Walk whenever possible to enjoy the city, but take it easy because the altitude can affect your pace. When taking a taxi, agree on the price before getting in and avoid hailing taxis on the street at night; instead, use reliable apps or hotel services. If you need to travel to remote areas, always opt for authorized tourist transportation for greater safety, and carry small change since many taxis and other forms of transport don’t have change.
Traveling to Cusco means discovering one of the most fascinating cities in the world, but it also means facing the altitude. At over 3,400 meters above sea level, it’s common for some travelers to experience soroche, or altitude sickness. This discomfort is a normal reaction of the body to the lack of oxygen and can manifest as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, and, in some cases, nausea. The good news is that it can be avoided or reduced by following simple recommendations that work in practice.
🫁Before you travel: Prepare your body
Before arriving in Cusco, it’s ideal to prepare your body for the altitude. Getting a good night’s sleep is essential, as arriving tired increases the likelihood of discomfort. It’s also recommended to hydrate from the day before and avoid alcohol, which dehydrates you and hinders acclimatization. These precautions help your body respond better to the change in altitude.
🛬Upon arrival in Cusco: Take it easy
Upon arrival, it’s important to take the necessary time to acclimatize. The first two or three hours should be relaxed, avoiding strenuous activities such as climbing stairs quickly, walking long distances, or carrying heavy luggage. Drinking coca tea is a traditional practice that helps improve breathing. It’s also recommended to eat light meals, opting for soups, simple carbohydrates, vegetables, and fruits, avoiding heavy, highly seasoned, or fried foods on the first day.
🥾First few days: Gentle activities and acclimatization
During the first few days, the key is to move slowly. Cusco has many steep streets, and trying to do everything quickly will only intensify the discomfort. Therefore, it’s not recommended to visit high-altitude destinations like Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon on your first day, as these places are over 4,200 meters above sea level and require good prior acclimatization. Ideally, start with gentle activities, such as a city tour or walks through the Historic Center.
💊Medications and Natural Remedies
Regarding medications, the most common ones among travelers are Sorojchi Pills or painkillers like paracetamol, but it’s always recommended to consult a doctor before taking any medication. Many hotels and travel agencies in Cusco offer supplemental oxygen, which can quickly relieve symptoms. There are also natural remedies like coca tea, muña (a type of mint), or eucalyptus, which help without side effects.
🏥When to Seek Medical Help
Finally, it’s important to know when it’s necessary to seek professional help. If your discomfort doesn’t improve, if you experience persistent vomiting, shortness of breath even at rest, or confusion, it’s essential to seek medical attention. These cases are common in Cusco, and healthcare professionals know how to treat them promptly.
The best way to avoid altitude sickness is to plan a well-defined itinerary. The first day should be easy, the second moderate, and the most strenuous activities—such as mountaineering or trekking—should be left for the third day. With these precautions, you can enjoy Cusco without discomfort and make the most of your trip.

We can see beautiful high Andean landscapes and especially the imposing mountain of Winincunca or better known as the mountain of the 7 colors, that resembles a combination of paintings with the impressive colors that shape the mountains, forming a unique setting. Its singular appearance is due to the sedimentary rocks that are in erosion in the cordillera of the Andes of the Vilcanota to the South east of the City of the Cusco.

Recommendations
Do the route considering your physical condition and adaptation to the altitude. We recommend taking this hike after having spent a few days acclimating. Our tour guides carry a first aid kit and an oxygen tank for use if necessary.
We recommend wearing proper hiking shoes, as this is a high mountain route.
Bring a backpack (maximum 25 liters) with your camera, hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
It sometimes rains on the mountain, so we recommend bringing a rain jacket and warm clothing, as well as a change of clothes you can leave in the transport to use after the hike if you get wet.
You can also bring coca leaves or coca candies — they help give you extra energy during the hike.
Three hours away from the city, in the province of Canas, district of Quehue, lies the Q’eswachaka Bridge — declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This Inca creation is still used today to cross the Apurímac River.
The material used for this hanging bridge is ichu, a type of grass that grows in the highlands of the Andes. Every year, the inhabitants of the rural communities of Perccaro, Huinchiri, Ccollana, and Qqewe gather to renew its structure, following an ancient tradition. The renewal of the bridge involves a ritual and a festivity lasting about four days, beginning with an ancestral ceremony to honor the Apu Quinsallallawi.
Itinerary
Departures: Tuesday – Thursday – Saturday and Sunday. Please confirm availability in advance.
We will begin our adventure very early in the morning. Starting at 4:30 a.m., we will pick up our passengers from their respective hotels or hostels. Once the entire group is gathered, around 5:00 a.m., we’ll begin our journey in our tourist transport through several districts of Cusco. Our first stop will be in Combapata, where we’ll take a short break to use the restrooms and enjoy a continental breakfast. Then we’ll head to the Combapata viewpoint, where we can admire a panoramic view of the confluence of two rivers — the Vilcanota and Salca Rivers. Continuing the tour, we’ll pass through the community of Pabellones, home to the Pabellones Volcano. After a brief stop there, we’ll continue through the district of Yanaoca, one of the eight districts of the province of Canas in Cusco.
We’ll then continue for about another hour until we reach the district of Q’ewe, where the famous Inca Bridge of “Q’eswachaka” is located. The bridge, made entirely of plant fiber, spans 28.67 meters. What’s remarkable is that it is reconstructed once a year in June by four local communities. Here, we’ll have time to explore Q’eswachaka and its surroundings while your guide shares the fascinating history of this incredible example of Inca engineering.
After visiting the bridge, we’ll head to Combapata, where we’ll enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Following lunch, we’ll take a short digestive walk of about 15–20 minutes to visit the beautiful lagoons of Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopía, and Pomacanchi. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to observe local flora and fauna and experience the richness of Andean culture. On our way back to Cusco, we’ll make an optional stop at the Rumipunku Portal before continuing our two-hour return trip, arriving in Cusco at approximately 5:00 p.m.
