Tour Summary
Three hours away from the city, in the province of Canas, district of Quehue, lies the Q’eswachaka Bridge — declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This Inca creation is still used today to cross the Apurímac River.
The material used for this hanging bridge is ichu, a type of grass that grows in the highlands of the Andes. Every year, the inhabitants of the rural communities of Perccaro, Huinchiri, Ccollana, and Qqewe gather to renew its structure, following an ancient tradition. The renewal of the bridge involves a ritual and a festivity lasting about four days, beginning with an ancestral ceremony to honor the Apu Quinsallallawi.
Itinerary
Departures: Tuesday – Thursday – Saturday and Sunday. Please confirm availability in advance.
We will begin our adventure very early in the morning. Starting at 4:30 a.m., we will pick up our passengers from their respective hotels or hostels. Once the entire group is gathered, around 5:00 a.m., we’ll begin our journey in our tourist transport through several districts of Cusco. Our first stop will be in Combapata, where we’ll take a short break to use the restrooms and enjoy a continental breakfast. Then we’ll head to the Combapata viewpoint, where we can admire a panoramic view of the confluence of two rivers — the Vilcanota and Salca Rivers. Continuing the tour, we’ll pass through the community of Pabellones, home to the Pabellones Volcano. After a brief stop there, we’ll continue through the district of Yanaoca, one of the eight districts of the province of Canas in Cusco.
We’ll then continue for about another hour until we reach the district of Q’ewe, where the famous Inca Bridge of “Q’eswachaka” is located. The bridge, made entirely of plant fiber, spans 28.67 meters. What’s remarkable is that it is reconstructed once a year in June by four local communities. Here, we’ll have time to explore Q’eswachaka and its surroundings while your guide shares the fascinating history of this incredible example of Inca engineering.
After visiting the bridge, we’ll head to Combapata, where we’ll enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Following lunch, we’ll take a short digestive walk of about 15–20 minutes to visit the beautiful lagoons of Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopía, and Pomacanchi. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to observe local flora and fauna and experience the richness of Andean culture. On our way back to Cusco, we’ll make an optional stop at the Rumipunku Portal before continuing our two-hour return trip, arriving in Cusco at approximately 5:00 p.m.
